Capturing Love, Anticipation, and a Growing Family
Every maternity photoshoot is special, but some sessions leave a lasting warmth in your heart long after the last shutter click. That was certainly the case when I had the honour of photographing Manisha and her beautiful family on a crisp February day in Taylor Park, St Helens, followed by an intimate indoor session using my mobile studio setup at their home. Despite the cold and cloudy weather, with a touch of lighting magic and careful editing, we created images that radiate joy, love, and glowing anticipation.
In this blog post, I’ll take you behind the scenes of this maternity photoshoot—from the creative vision and styling to the technical challenges and final result. Whether you're expecting and searching for maternity photo inspiration or simply appreciate beautiful storytelling through photography, this one’s for you.
The Beauty of Taylor Park in Winter
Embracing Nature’s Neutral Palette
Taylor Park in St Helens is a location I often recommend for outdoor family photoshoots. Even in the middle of February, when the trees are bare and the skies grey, the open space and soft winter light create a perfect backdrop for timeless portraits.
We started the session outdoors, and while the weather wasn’t ideal—it was chilly and overcast—Manisha and her family embraced it wholeheartedly. Wrapped in love and excitement for their soon-to-arrive bundle of joy, they brought their own warmth and colour to the frame.
Manisha wore two stunning gowns for the shoot. Her first look was a dreamy lilac dress adorned with delicate floral detailing on the shoulders and waist. The flow of the fabric caught the wind beautifully, giving the images a sense of motion and elegance. Her second look—a bold red sequin gown with a flowing cape—added a dramatic flair, especially against the serene lake in the background.
Family Moments That Melt Hearts
A Big Sister’s Joy
One of the sweetest elements of this shoot was including their daughter, who is soon to be promoted to "Big Sister." With her sparkling eyes and floral headband matching her mum’s, she proudly held a sign announcing her new role. The bond between the family members was evident in every interaction—playful smiles, gentle embraces, and shared laughter.
Capturing these candid, authentic moments is what I strive for as a maternity and family photographer. It’s these glimpses of connection that make a gallery feel alive and deeply personal.
Creating Magic with My Mobile Studio
From Natural Light to Studio Precision
After the outdoor session, we headed to the family's home for the second part of the shoot. I set up my mobile studio in their living room, bringing along professional backdrops, lighting, and props. This setup allowed for a controlled environment where we could take timeless studio-style portraits without stepping outside—perfect for a February day!
Manisha changed into a soft white gown that highlighted her baby bump beautifully. We played with backlighting and silhouette compositions to give some variety to the gallery, while floral headpieces and subtle posing kept the look fresh, feminine, and graceful.
The final family portraits, where everyone dressed up elegantly, brought a classy and slightly formal vibe to the session. Manisha looked radiant in her floral crown, while her husband and daughter complemented the aesthetic with their stylish attire. These are the kind of photos that could easily be framed or used for birth announcements.
Overcoming Weather Challenges with Lighting and Editing
Turning Gloomy Skies into Soft Drama
February in the UK often brings cold winds and grey skies—but with the right lighting setup, it’s still possible to achieve that soft, glowing look that defines high-end maternity photography.
For this shoot, I used two Godox lights to bring out the best in both outdoor and indoor settings. My key light was equipped with a small octabox, which provided soft, flattering light on the subject’s face and body. To add dimension and separate Manisha from the background, I used a rim light with a yellow gel. This subtle warmth gave the photos a golden glow that beautifully contrasted with the cooler tones of the February landscape.
This dual-light setup allowed me to simulate natural sunlight and create a dynamic, professional look even when the sun refused to show up. In post-production, I further enhanced the atmosphere by balancing skin tones, reducing harsh shadows, and adding a soft cinematic feel to the final images.
Why Maternity Photography Matters
Maternity photos are not just about showing the baby bump—they’re about documenting one of the most transformative and beautiful periods in a family's life. For Manisha and her loved ones, this session was a celebration of new life, family unity, and the magic of motherhood.
If you’re considering a maternity shoot, I always recommend doing it around the 28–34 week mark, when the bump is beautifully visible, and you still feel relatively comfortable moving around. Outfits, accessories, and posing ideas can all be tailored to your personality and style, whether you prefer a whimsical fairy-tale look, something elegant and formal, or laid-back and casual.
Final Thoughts & Client Appreciation
Working with Manisha and her family was an absolute joy. Their openness, warmth, and trust allowed me to capture these beautiful moments in an authentic and artistic way. From Taylor Park’s soft winter scenery to the intimate moments at home, this session was a true reminder of why I love maternity photography—it’s about love, new beginnings, and the stories we carry forward.
