A Throwback to My Studio Days in St Helens

Before I transitioned to a fully mobile photography studio, I had the pleasure of working with some incredibly creative individuals at my former photography studio in St Helens, Merseyside. One standout session that still inspires me today was with Diana – a uniquely styled beauty photoshoot that perfectly blended editorial glamour, artistic flair, and fierce self-expression.

This shoot was all about capturing confidence, empowerment, and inner strength, which are the core of what I aim to bring out in every session, whether it’s beauty, boudoir, or branding photography.

While this shoot took place in a traditional studio space, the results you see here can now be achieved anywhere – thanks to my fully equipped mobile studio setup. Diana arrived with a creative concept — a modern goddess aesthetic that combined glamour with symbolic beauty. The makeup was bold and dimensional: pink and violet tones blended into a dramatic eye, winged liner paired with custom white linework on the brows, forehead, and chin.

Her shimmering lips were a showstopper — a glittery pink accented with a delicate vertical line, symbolizing both elegance and individuality. Adding to the mystical aesthetic, we applied a faux jewel to the forehead and enhanced the look with soft, glowing lighting.

Every photo we captured radiated power and femininity. Diana’s calm yet confident presence in front of the lens made the session effortless and deeply expressive.

Behind the Scenes: Lighting, Posing & Retouching

Let’s get into the technical side of this shoot. For Diana’s session, we used:

Key light: Large octabox positioned above and in front to softly wrap light around the face.
Rim light: Placed behind and gelled slightly to give dimension to the hair.
Background: Pink and white seamless paper backgrounds for contrast and softness.
Camera: Canon 5D Mark IV + 85mm f/1.4 for dreamy compression and detail.

We shot tethered so Diana could see previews in real time, allowing us to adjust expression, posing, and hair positioning with precision.

Post-processing was done in Lightroom and Luminar Neo with natural skin retouching to preserve texture while enhancing tones, contrast, and colour vibrance.
