Nicole’s 19th Birthday Gift Turned Glamour Fashion photoshoothoot
For her 19th birthday, Nicole received a thoughtful and empowering gift: a professional portrait and fashion photoshoot. I had the pleasure of bringing my bigger mobile studio setup to Limelight Student Accommodation in Liverpool for a session that blended elegance, glamour, and editorial flair—all in a spacious social room booked just for the occasion.
The Location: Limelight Student Accommodation, Liverpool
The shoot took place in a large, stylish social room within Limelight, a modern student accommodation complex in Liverpool. The open layout provided ample space to create a full studio setup, complete with a seamless backdrop and controlled lighting. It was the perfect canvas for a shoot focused on fashion-forward portraits and high-end glamour shots.
Studio Setup: Creating a High-End Look in a Student Venue
For this session, I used my bigger mobile studio configuration:
2m wide background for full-body and seated fashion portraits
Multiple light modifiers, including softboxes and grids for controlled highlights and shadows
Backlight and spot effects to create editorial-style contrast
Natural and artificial lighting blends to add variety to the gallery
This flexible setup proves you don’t need a commercial studio to achieve magazine-quality results.
Nicole’s Wardrobe and Styling
Nicole brought a dynamic range of outfits that perfectly balanced elegance and boldness. From a tailored brown suit with a designer tie to a sleek black ensemble with lace details, her wardrobe offered both sophistication and edge. Paired with flawless hair and makeup, she truly owned the set in every shot.
Her accessories, including oversized glasses and statement jewellery, added character and style. Each outfit change brought a different energy, allowing us to explore multiple creative lighting and posing directions. Her confident style choices made the session feel like a professional fashion campaign.
Playing with Light: Shadows, Highlights, and Drama
To keep the session creative and varied, we played with a mix of lighting techniques:
High key clean backgrounds for beauty portraits
Spotlight with shadow play to add a cinematic, fashion-forward feel
Dappled lighting effects using patterned light to mimic natural textures
By layering and sculpting light, I was able to create visuals with texture and depth, enhancing both the mood and styling of each look. This kind of experimentation is what makes fashion portraiture so engaging—for both photographer and client.
Behind the Scenes: Setting Up the Studio
Setting up the mobile studio took about 45 minutes, including:
Background assembly
Tripod and camera alignment
Main and fill light positioning
Light testing and white balance calibration
Once the lighting was dialled in, we were ready to explore creative poses and angles. I always bring backup lighting and lens options to tailor the look for each client’s personality and style. In Nicole's case, we kept things sleek and modern, with a splash of drama.
Preparing for Your Own Fashion Portrait Session

Bring multiple outfits: Choose a mix of bold and elegant looks
Accessorise thoughtfully: Jewellery, belts, and eyewear can elevate a shot
Get your hair and makeup done professionally if possible
Relax and be yourself: The best portraits come when you're comfortable
We’ll guide you through flattering poses and lighting setups, so there’s no need to worry if you’re new to being in front of the camera.
Capturing Confidence and Personality
At the heart of this shoot was celebrating Nicole’s personality. She exudes confidence and poise beyond her years, and my aim was to capture those qualities through a lens of fashion, style, and empowerment. Her poses were natural yet expressive, bringing out both her youthful energy and her growing sense of sophistication.
Fashion photography isn’t just about clothes—it’s about attitude, emotion, and presence. Nicole brought all of that and more.
